My bible disciple, Jane, who is often sent on marketing and promo missions by their multi-national company, recently told me of her visit to Cebu last week. She said she didn't enjoy the place as she did before. It looked more like Alabang than a place for refreshing and relaxing vacations, she said. But if you're a guy more hell bent on shopping than relaxing on vacations, Cebu is right for you, she added. In her recent Cebu trip, she and her company stayed at Regency Hotel. She talked about the roller coaster ride available on the top floor that costs thousands of pesos to enjoy. And the Regency, she said, looked too crowded. I told her that's good business for the hotel. But it was bad vacation experience for her, she said. She also lamented the sorry state of the Magellan's Cross in Mactan. It looked more like Magellan's pee place, she almost commented. And the old church nearby lacks maintenance. There's got to be some restorations done to that place! And pronto! But on a positive note, Jane told me she thought the best seafood restaurants are still in Cebu! How to get to Cebu? Buy a ticket and get on the ship! Now!

that sounds interesting. does your friend also come from Manila? I live in Dumaguete, but I definitely prefer Cebu compared to Manila when I need to go into a bigger City for shopping. On th other hand both Cities wouldn't be my choice for a vacation. cheers Rhoody

As a kid I used to visit Mactan Island during Sundays on board a motorized boat from a pier near Carbon market. There was no bridge that connected the island from Cebu Island. As far as I could remember the white sands on Mactan are only found on remote areas. The white sands on the compounds of five-star hotels now on the island were hauled in there from sandbars as far as islands off Zamboanga del Norte. There were times that we went fish catching in Mactan and all we had seen were rocks--not fine white sands. So do not be fooled with the white beaches of Mactan. They are not original. There were transported by barges and dumped there to please European tourists looking for white sands. But nevertheless enjoy the sands and the place. If you really want white sands go to Boracay, El Nido, Dakak, they are really found in the place unlike Mactan which used to be black rocks and black sands--not white.
