Default Heading to the Phils

Hi everyone,
My wife (she is filipina) and I are holidaying in the Philippines soon and we're both looking forward to it. My wife because she hasn't been "home" for 14 years, and me because I've never been before.
We'll be spending the 1st week or so in Masbate as that's where my wife is originally from. While we're there we'll be doing the usual things but I'm also hoping to get some fishing in I managed to send a bit of fishing gear in a Balakbayan box we sent recently so that'll save me having to bring it over in my luggage.
Does anyone have any tips on fishing Masbate? Where to go? who to ask? what can I expect? I'm happy to throw lures from the shore but I imagine I'll also get out on a banka at some stage.
We're also spending a few days in and around Manila..then 4 or 5 days at Puerto Galera on Mindoro before going to Cebu for a look around then heading home.
So...I'm really looking forward to visiting the country that I've heard so much about.

Welcome to PB,
great to have you on board. I must admit that I have no clue about fishing in Masbate. Having said that, down here in Dumaguete, visitors often get in touch with local fishermen and go out with them in the early hours.

maybe that is an option in Masbate too, I am sure your wife's family knows some folks where you can go with.

cheers

Rhoody

Be aware though that local fishermen do not use a pole and lures, they throw nets out looking for the big haul to sell to the market. Sport fishing is not rare but it is uncommon around here. However, having said that, I'm sure you can cast a line and will catch something!

also be aware about some local regulations which may exist. What is allowed to local fishermen might be not allowed to foreign tourists or expats.

By the way... some even catch fish barehanded ...

Thanks for the replies and the advice.
I've already been in touch with my wife's relatives so I'll be going out with those guys while I'm there. I'll also see how I go from the shore near a resort we're staying at, and maybe hire a boat as well.

I'll be sure to ask about rules and regulations applying to those other than locals..hadn't actually thought about and I certainly don't want to do the wrong thing.

I'm looking forward to trip... heading over middle of next week.

thanks again guys.
