| I am a daily commuter of public transport. In my observation I find that being king of the road will depend on where you are located. Let’s ride… Kalesa – These are horse driven couches. I included this in my list because this is the first means of public transportation known in the Philippines. For cultural values and preservations I give respects to this road king. Though it is rare now to see this on the roads, this public transport still operates in Intramuros, Binondo, some tourist locations, and in some provinces. Jeepney – This is the most popular means of transportation in the country. Based on history this started after WWII. The Americans left behind their jeeps, the Filipinos then customized this to accommodate more passengers and dressed it up flamboyantly. Wherever you go, in the city or even in remote areas you will see jeepneys to drop you off to your destination. You’ll be having the ride of your life because most are swerving really fast on some wide roads. All hail, whether you’re a BMW or a Mercedes make way for the king. There are limitations though, in Metro Manila they are not allowed to rule in EDSA and some business streets. Tricycle – These are motorcycles with coaches to accommodated 2 to 3 passengers. These can be found in subdivisions, barangays, and towns all over Metro Manila and in the provinces. Normally they have a station and can only bring you to limited destinations like for example just within a certain barangay. Most of the time they are a nuisance to private driven cars but what the heck tricycles are road kings in these parts. They are not allowed to reign in main streets though. Bus – King of EDSA, make way or you’ll pay (or should I say crushed? Hehe). Do I need to describe further? |
