Quiapo Quiapo is a historical place in Metro Manila. Quiapo is already Quiapo during the Spanish Era. I remember that Quiapo was mentioned too in one of Dr. Jose Rizal’s novel. And to further recall what I have learned in my history, Quiapo was founded on the year 1586 (oh my, this place is really old). Also during those years Quiapo is the center of commerce and it was the place to be for the elites or as what our history say “illustrados”.
Well that was centuries ago. Now Quiapo is way beyond compare to what history books say. If you travel to Quiapo you will not see any of the “illustrados” anymore but rather you’ll have close encounters to bigger chunk of the Philippine population pie the “masa”. This place is not posh but going to Quiapo is a thrill, a daring act, and an adventure.
Picturing Quiapo it is a place where the religious and the mystical meet. Because in Quiapo this is where you will se the Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene where devotees pray for their salvation. On the contrary outside the church mystical items and people are abundant. There are fortune tellers, vendors selling lucky charms, manggagamot (witch doctors) to cure voodoo, and herbal roots for abortion. Totally an irony because all I have mentioned irate the Catholic Church.
Quiapo is still a commercial center but not for the “illustrados” anymore but rather for the masas who are seeking for cheaper alternatives and bargains. Like branded imitations, pirated DVDs, clothes, and other necessities. You’ll also see weird items here like adult toys and other out of the ordinary items.
Other interesting attractions (or perhaps scary for some) are the goons, beggars, and street food.
Tips when you go to Quiapo: bring a companion with you, be careful with your money or wallet, and avoid going here on Fridays because it is Nazareno Day expect more people and traffic. |
