| Do you want to know a bit of Philippine history? I strongly suggest a visit to Corregidor Island. Corregidor Island, a rock island shaped like a tadpole at the entrance of Manila Bay had played a vital role during World War II here in the Far East.During the Spanish times, Corregidor served not only as a fortress of defense and a penal institution, but also as a signal outpost to warn Manila of the approach of hostile ships, and as a station for Customs inspection. Corregidor comes from the Spanish word corregir, meaning "to correct.” A local travel/tour company offers Corregidor day tour packages that includes: round trip ferry transfers; shrine, entrance and terminal fees; guided island tour, buffet lunch but exclusive of Malinta Tunnel Light and Sound Show, there is a hotel and restaurant facility for those who want to stay over. Attractions: Malinta Tunnel is a tunnel complex built by the USACE was initially used as a bomb-proof storage and personnel bunker, but was later converted to a 1,000-bed hospital. It is now home to an audio-visual presentation by National Artist Lamberto V. Avellana of the events that took place on the island. (source: Wikipedia) Mile Long Barracks it was said to be the longest barracks in the world (not actually a mile long). Heavily damaged during the capture and liberation of the island, the ruins are still standing today. (source: Wikipedia) Pacific War Memorial was erected to honor of the Filipino and American servicemen who participated in the Pacific. The major memorial structure is a rotunda in which a circular altar falls directly under the dome's open center through which light falls on the altar during daylight hours. Eternal Flame of Freedom A large steel sculpture which symbolizes the Flame of Freedom burning eternally. It is located at the rear of the Pacific War Memorial dome on a raised platform which provides visitors a breathtaking panoramic view of Manila Bay, the Bataan Peninsula, and the coastline of Cavite.
