The commission cannot legislate a language for the Filipinos. A national language should be acceptable, not only by the majority, but most of the population. Less than half of the population speak Tagalog, thus Tagalog could not be made a national language. The commission has to study deeply that words acceptable to most. If it could not produce the words for a particular time frame, they should better forget about it. Better adopt English as a national language.

Talking Commission on Filipino Language

The act only creates a commission to study all different languages in the Philippines with the hope of making the Filipino language which is acceptable to most of the population. But until now the Filipino language ( which is really Tagalog) is not acceptable by most people from Visayas and Mindanao. They better dismantle the commission and just leave the people decide what language they would use-- Chavacanos, Sugbuhanon, Maranao or English.
An attempt by the commission was to use the word "salungpuwit" for a chair. But this is a funny transliteration, which is not acceptable. why not use the spanish for chair, Silla, which is understandable to Cebuanos and people in Mindanao. For sure. Cebuano would not use the word "salungpuwit."
