Maranaos and Subanen Are Languages in Mindanao In ancient times, Mindanao was divided into four kingdoms. One of the kingdoms had its seat around Lake Lanao. They had their own language, which up to this day is still spoken in Lanao del Sur and Maranaos all over the Philippines. The other kingdom had its seat in Butuan and the fourth in Maguindanao, that included Sulu, Basilan and Borneo. Islam teacher came before the Spaniards, and the Muslims were not conquered.
Maranaos have their own epic, the epic of the Indarapatra, just like the Subanen who have their own oral culture-- with their own epic that when recited would last for weeks.
The entire archipelago of Zamboanga was the Subano nation with its seat at the Siari Valley in barangay Mandhih, Sindangan, near the boundary of the new Zamboanga provinces.A descendant is Jalosjos of Zamboanga del Norte. The Jalosjoses descended from Timuay Datu Maniwantiwan.
An example of Subanon word is "nandau," meaning today. This was also the name of a restaurant on Legaspi Village which was then run by the incumbent governor of Zambo Norte.
Meanwhile, a sample Maranao phrase is " anda ka soong?", which means "to where are you going," Sometimes this serves as a greeting, which is impolite but acceptable in the society. Anda is where," ka" is you "so-ong" to go, which is also a Sugbuhanon language which means "go underneath" a bridge or whatever higher up. See, these are languages, not dialects, unlike the Boholano dialect.
