Documents and some archeological facts proved that there was an existing form of government before the Spanish regime. The town or the municipality was first known as the 'Malabago' derived from its leader who was a contemporary of Haring Lomod (who was a famous chief known to be the first to revolt against the Spaniards. Haring Lomod is also known as 'Tamblot'). The original settlement of Malabago was situated at the high ground area of the contemporary Cortes (near the river of Abatan). While the place of Tamblot was then located at Baranggay Viga in the fen of Antequera that extended to the valleys of the riverside opposite of Malabago (past the present day bridge of Abatan).
